Our Community The North Country is the area of New York state North of Syracuse from I-81 north to Quebec, from the St. Lawrence River east to Lake Champlain. This river is the 3rd largest river system in the U.S. and is a Seaway. Ships from around the world pass through its waters. The Adirondack State Park, the largest in the U.S., is entirely within the North Country, as are the scenic Thousand Islands.
We are an area of old mountains, beautiful lakes, and commanding forests. Gouverneur is one of the picturesque small towns that dot the landscape in Northern New York. Centrally located, we are north of the Watertown/Fort Drum area and southwest of Canton (home to St. Lawrence and Clarkson Universities). Ogdensburg and Potsdam are about a 40 minute drive away, it's only a 1/2 hour drive to the Thousand islands, the Canadian border, the Adirondack Foothills and our village is called the "Gateway to St. Lawrence County."
The Oswegatchie River winds from Cranberry Lake all through St.Lawrence County and empties into the St. Lawrence River at Ogdensburg. It is a canoeing river as well as the home of northern pike, bass and sturgeons.
